Life science funding opportunities and the EIC Work Programme 2026

The European Innovation Council (EIC) is the EU’s flagship Work Programme for identifying, developing, and scaling breakthrough technologies. Unlike traditional research funding mechanisms, the EIC supports the entire innovation pipeline, from research and early-stage R&D, to transitioning to commercial use and industrial scale-up. They employ a coordinated set of instruments: Pathfinder, Transition, the Advanced Innovation Challenges, the Accelerator, and STEP.

The EIC is designed to help European innovators overcome the “valley of death” between research results and investable companies. It combines grants, blended finance, and equity investments with portfolio management and tailored business support. The goal is to keep Europe competing globally in areas such as AI, advanced materials, biotech, quantum, clean-tech, and other strategic technologies.

Preparing for the 2026 calls with FFUND

Applications must be submitted via the Funding & Tenders Portal. Applicants are encouraged to engage with National Contact Points or the Enterprise Europe Network for guidance.

EIC Work Programme 2026: Europe’s €1.4 billion commitment

The EIC Work Programme 2026 is updated to simplify processes, broaden eligibility, and better align funding with Europe’s long-term competitiveness and security priorities. With €1.424 billion allocated, it reinforces Europe’s commitment to building a resilient deep-tech ecosystem.

Key funding schemes

  • EIC Pathfinder (€262 million): Grants up to €4 million for visionary, multidisciplinary research with potential for radical breakthroughs.
  • EIC Transition (€100 million): Up to €2.5 million to transform research results into market-ready innovations. Eligibility now includes Horizon Research Infrastructures.
  • Advanced Innovation Challenges (€6 million pilot): Lump-sum grants (~€300k) for high-risk projects with a proof-of-concept, with follow-on funding (~€2.5 million) expected in 2027.
  • EIC Accelerator (€634 million): Grants up to €2.5 million plus equity investments (€0.5–10 million) for scaling high-impact transformative innovations.
  • STEP Scale-Up (€300 million): Equity investments (€10–30 million) targeting high-potential SMEs and mid-caps, aiming to catalyse €50 million+ in follow-on financing.

What’s new compared to previous Work Programmes

1. Optimized EIC Accelerator applications

  • Full proposal reduced.
  • Streamlined financial and business sections.
  • Introduction of six cut-off dates for shorter evaluation cycles.

2. Launch of the Advanced Innovation Challenges (AIC) pilot

  • New ARPA-style approach for early feasibility testing.
  • Introduces mandatory user workshops and portfolio-style management.
  • Designed to speed up high-risk projects that do not fit traditional R&I pathways.

3. Expanded eligibility criteria for EIC Transition

  • Now includes Horizon Europe Research Infrastructures, broadening the pool of potential applicants and strengthening translation from large EU research facilities.

4. Increased Pathfinder Open budget

  • The higher total call budget and project cap reflect high oversubscription in previous years and the need to strengthen Europe’s upstream innovation pipeline.

5. Refinement of STEP Scale-Up to align with the STEP Regulation (2024)

  • Stronger focus on technologies deemed strategic for European sovereignty.
  • More emphasis on securing qualified investor pre-commitments.
  • Stricter evidence of market traction and ability to catalyse major investment rounds.

6. Continued integration with Fast Track and Plug-In schemes

  • Pre-Accelerator awardees, Women TechEU beneficiaries, and national-level accelerator graduates can access Fast Track pathways to the EIC Accelerator.
