On June 10-11, FFUND attended Bio Innovations Europe in The Hague, one of Europe’s leading business development events focused on industrial biotechnology, bio-based materials, circular production, and sustainable manufacturing. The event brought together more than 400 innovators, investors, industry leaders, and policymakers to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable economy.
Bio Innovations Europe 2026 brings innovators together

During a series of one-on-one meetings, I had the opportunity to speak with passionate entrepreneurs developing innovative bio-based solutions. We discussed funding opportunities available through European and national programmes.
A particularly interesting development was the strong presence of Japanese organisations. Since Japan became an associated partner in Horizon Europe, new opportunities have emerged for collaboration and participation in European Commission-funded projects, creating exciting possibilities for international innovation partnerships.
A strong Dutch biotech ecosystem
It was also encouraging to see the Dutch ecosystem well represented by organisations such as HollandBIO, Planet B.io and Biotech Booster. These organisations help bridge the gap between scientific innovation, politics and business, creating the conditions needed to bring new technologies to market.
Bio-based innovation still faces perception challenges
Throughout the event, one observation stood out. Many of the technologies showcased can significantly contribute to circular production, recycling and sustainability goals. Yet, innovators often face an unexpected challenge: societal perception.

There remains a persistent belief that if a solution is fully natural or bio-based, it cannot be as effective as a traditional alternative. A well-known example is when Pritt discovered that its glue stick was already naturally bio-based and vegan. After highlighting this on the packaging, customer complaints increased, with users assuming the product no longer worked as well (even though nothing had changed!).
Events like Bio Innovations Europe bring together entrepreneurs, industry, investors and policymakers to share challenges like these, find solutions and increase awareness of the enormous potential of bio-based innovation. At FFUND, we are proud to support these pioneers in securing the funding needed to bring sustainable innovations from the lab to the market.
